Urgent Call for Government and Security Agencies Intervention in Bassa and Bokkos LGAs
Hon Chief Dr Mrs Mary Ishaya Afan, mni, Federal Commissioner representing Plateau State in the National Population Commission, condemns the recent attacks in Bassa and Bokkos LGAs that resulted in loss of lives and destruction of properties worth millions. I offer my sincerest condolences to the communities for the lives lost and pray for peace and stability to return to the region.
The state government and security agencies must act swiftly to restore peace and stability, prioritize citizens' well-being and safety, and provide humanitarian assistance. We call on the security agencies to intensify their efforts to protect lives and property, and ensure that those responsible for the attacks are brought to justice. A thorough investigation into the attacks is necessary to ensure justice and accountability. We urge the government to protect citizens' fundamental rights and create a conducive environment for sustainable development.
Continued attacks in the state will negatively impact the National Population Commission's efforts to collect, analyze, and disseminate population data, hindering informed decision-making and development planning. The NPC relies on stable environments to effectively manage population data, conduct censuses, and provide vital statistics.
According to Amnesty International, the Nigerian authorities must investigate the security lapses that enabled these attacks and ensure accountability by bringing perpetrators to justice. The government must demonstrate genuine commitment to protecting lives and property, rather than just issuing statements condemning the attacks
Signed,
Jessy Plang
Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Federal Commissioner
